Wildlife
The Isle of Luing is an excellent
place to see many species. Otters and hares are resident on the
island, and seals, porpoises and dolphins are seen in the sea
around. There are often chances to see buzzards, peregrines and
hen harriers, as well as visiting eagles. Located on the edge
of the new Firth of Lorn marine conservation area, it offers opportunities
to view marine wildlife as well.
There are a variety of reserves
in the area, including the Wildlife Trust's Ballachuan hazel wood
less than a mile away. There are many Forestry Commission sites
nearby offering waymarked paths and cycle trails which take you
deep into forest habitats and up close to the wildlife within.
Scottish Natural Heritage offers a number of reserves in the region,
including the Great Moss, and Taynish oak woods.
There are a good selection of
guided trips in the area, including boat trips to many of the
neighbouring islands, landrover safari's and guided walks on Mull.
These days out in the company of local experts often offer the
best opportunities to view the rarer of our native species.
