Local Area
The Isle of Luing is well placed
for exploring the surrounding area.
The Islands of Seil and
Easdale
Luing is reached from Seil, which itself
is connected to the mainland by the famous "Bridge over the
Atlantic". With a pub, restaurants, golf course, the renowned
An Cala gardens and the Highland Arts Exhibition, there is plenty
here to while away a day or two. It also provides access to the
small island of Easdale. This picturesque haven is reached by
passenger ferry, and has a pub and a fantastic museum documenting
the islands past, especially the slate industry which thrived
here in the 19th century.
Oban
The bustling harbourside town of Oban is
16 miles north of Luing. Known as "The Gateway to the Isles"
it has ferry links to the Hebrides, Mull, Tirree, Coll, Lismore,
Kerrera and more. There are also a wide variety of boat trips
available, from one hour trips to view seals, to day trips to
Iona and Staffa. Oban also offers a wide variety of shops and
a multitude of places to eat and drink. Visit the distillery,
or Caithness Glass factory shop. With Atlantis leisure centre
and indoor pool, a golf course, bowling alley and scuba diving
facilities there are activites to please all the family.
Mull
The island of Mull is only a 45 minute
ferry trip away from Oban. One of the largest Scottish islands,
there is plenty here to see and do ranging from historic castles,
a narrow gauge railway, whale watching trips and a visit to colourful
Tobermory, home of the BBC's childrens programme "Balamory".
To the North
If you continue north from Oban there are
many venues for days out to occupy you when staying on Luing.
Within easy reach are historic castles, a Sea Life Centre, and
the Rare Breeds Centre to entertain children. There are a huge
selection of walks, including nature reserves and Forestry Commission
paths, as well as many miles of coastline to explore.
To the South
Travelling south from Luing takes you through
prehistoric Kilmartin Glen, past the Crinan Canal and on towards
Lochgilphead and Tarbert, or eastwards to Inverary. En route are
the gardens at Arduaine and Crarae, Craobh Haven marina, and the
beautiful Ardfern peninsular, home to many local artists.
